The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Review Date: March 25th, 2022

Hi everyone. This is my 1st movie review on my new Movie Blog website known as “Popcorn Office”. I haven’t fully navigated through the “Universe” website builder though. But I’ll figure it out as time goes on. So without further ado, let’s get to the review.

WARNING: SPOILERS!!

The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American Fantasy Musical movie that was produced by MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayer). It is also based on the popular children’s book with the title of the same name by L. Frank Baum. The film stars Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke, Margaret Hamilton, & Terry as well. It was directed by Victor Fleming at the time of the film’s production.

The film starts off at a Sepia Tone, a reddish-brown color. It depicts all of Dorothy’s (Judy Garland) troubles that she has to deal with, while living with Aunt Em (Clara Blandick). There she visits a fortune-teller (Frank Morgan) in order to help her out on her family issues. Shortly after, there’s a massive twister which breaks loose into Kansas, sending Dorothy & Toto (Terry) into a beautiful place known as Oz.

From the moment she opens the door to Oz, the movie goes into color (which a lot of movies do now), & looks around Munchkinland. She also meets Glinda (Billie Burke), the Good Witch of the North. Sometime later, the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) arrives, & accuses Dorothy of killing her sister known as The Wicked Witch of the East. During their 1st encounter, she (Dorothy) receives The Ruby Slippers that was transferred to her feet by Glinda. Enraged, she vows revenge, & she vanishes. She starts to go on a journey to find the Wizard of Oz (Frank Morgan), while following the Yellow Brick Road.

During her journey, she encounters The Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), The Tin Man (Jack Haley), & The Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) as well. The Scarecrow wants a brain, the Tin Man wants a heart, & The Cowardly Lion wants courage. They meet up, & they go see the Wizard of Oz.

When they arrive, he (The Wizard of Oz) sends them on a quest to retrieve the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West. During their quest, there are many dangers, & Dorothy gets captured by Flying Monkeys (1 of the Witch’s Minions). Then, the other 3 (Scarecrow, Tin Man, & Lion) go on a rescue mission to save Dorothy. But when they rescue her, the Witch arrives, & there are more dangers. Then, the Wicked Witch of the West sets fire to the Scarecrow, causing Dorothy to toss a bucket of water onto him (Scarecrow), & accidentally splashing onto the Witch. During her demise she says…

“I’M MELTING!!”

When they return to Oz, their quest is complete, & they receive their rewards. But it is then revealed that the Wizard of Oz is a good man. But he’s not a great wizard though. Dorothy, & the Wizard part ways, as he (The Wizard of Oz) departs onto a balloon. Then, Glinda arrives, & she tells Dorothy to tap her Ruby Slippers with her feet, & she says…

“There’s no place like home.”

After that, she returns home, & it was all revealed to be a dream, & promises all of her family to never run away from home again.

THE END

I love everything about this movie, & I used to watch this movie every single day. It would also drive my fraternal twin brother crazy. This is 1 of my Childhood favorite movies of all time.

I could definitely watch this movie right now, even if there’s lots of music in it.

OVERALL: 10/10
