Review Date: October 25th, 2022

Hi everyone. This is my Review on 1 of my Favorite Horror Movies. Jack Kroll from NEWSWEEK Says it’s the 1st Epic Horror Film. But say hello to Johnny. Let’s get down to the review of The Shining (1980).

CAST:

Jack Nicholson - Jack Torrance

Shelley Duvall - Wendy Torrance

Danny Lloyd - Danny Torrance

Scatman Crothers - Dick Hallorann

⚠️ WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!! ⚠️

Jack Torrance takes a winter caretaker position at the Overlook Hotel in the Rocky Mountains, which closes every winter. After his arrival, Stuart Ullman (manager) advises Torrance that Charles Grady, the previous caretaker, killed his family, & himself in the hotel.

Meanwhile, back in Boulder, Danny (Jack’s Son), has both a premonition & a seizure. Wendy (Jack’s Wife), tells the doctor about a past incident when Jack dislocated Danny's shoulder during an alcoholic outburst. The incident convinced Jack to stop drinking alcohol.

Before leaving for the seasonal break, Dick Hallorann (head chef) informs Danny of a telepathic ability that the 2 share, which he calls…

SHINING!

Hallorann tells Danny the hotel also has a…

SHINE

due to residues from unpleasant past events, & warns him to avoid Room 237. There’s a documentary on this movie called… Room 237 (2012)

Danny starts having frightening visions, including the Grady Sisters. Meanwhile, Jack's mental health gets worse. He gets nowhere with his writing, is prone to violent outbursts, & has dreams of killing his family as well.

Danny gets physically bruised after visiting an unlocked Room 237 out of curiosity. Jack encounters a female ghost in the room. But blames Danny for self-inflicting the bruises. Jack is persuaded back to drinking by the ghostly bartender named Lloyd. Then, Ghostly figures, start to appear in the Gold Room. Grady informs Jack that Danny has reached out to Hallorann using his….

TALENT

& says that Jack must…

CORRECT

his wife and child.

Meanwhile, Wendy finds Jack's manuscript with…

ALL WORK & NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY!

written repeatedly. When Jack threatens her life, Wendy knocks him unconscious with a baseball bat & locks him in the kitchen pantry. But she & Danny cannot leave due to Jack having previously sabotaged the hotel's 2-way radio & snowcat.

WENDY, GIVE ME THE BAT!

Back in their hotel room, Danny is saying

REDRUM

several times, & even writes the word on the bathroom door. Wendy sees the word in the mirror, & realizes that the word spells out murder backwards. Jack is freed by Grady, & goes after Wendy & Danny with an axe. Then, Danny escapes outside through the bathroom window, & Wendy fights Jack off with a knife when he breaks through the door.

HERE’S JOHNNY!

Elsewhere, Hallorann, having flown back to Colorado after Danny's telepathic SOS, reaches the hotel in another snowcat. His arrival distracts Jack, who ambushes & murders Hallorann in the lobby, then pursues Danny into the hedge maze. Wendy runs through the hotel looking for Danny, encountering the hotel's ghosts & a vision of cascading blood that’s similar to Danny's premonition.

Meanwhile, in the hedge maze, Danny misleads Jack, & hides behind a snowdrift, while Jack follows a fake trail. Danny & Wendy reunite and leave in Hallorann's snowcat, leaving Jack to experience hypothermia in the maze.

At the epilogue, there is a photograph in the hotel hallway, & Jack is pictured standing amidst a crowd of party revelers from July 4, 1921.

THE END (for now)

The Shining (1980) is 1 of my Favorite Horror Movies. When I used to take Film Class a couple of years ago, there was an assignment from my Film Teacher, where she would tell us to pick 1 Horror/Suspense Film from 1980 to Present Day. I chose this movie (see title of review).

After I watched it, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It was so good. It gave me the chills down my spine.

Also, there’s a sequel to this movie known as…

Doctor Sleep (2019)
