Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Review Date: March 31st, 2022

Ah, The Empire Strikes Back (1980). A lot of people consider this film to be a fan-favorite Star Wars movie. It has 1 of the greatest plot twists in the history of cinema, along with several character introductions. However, it was the sequel to the very 1st Star Wars film, before the prequels were made later in the late 1990s to 2000s. But anyways, let’s get down to the review.

WARNING: SPOILERS!!

3 years after the destruction of the Death Star, the snowy Battle of Hoth rages on. It’s the Rebel Alliance vs. The Empire once again. But Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is instructed by his deceased mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness), tells him to go to Dagobah, so that Yoda (Frank Oz) can help Luke finish his training as a Jedi Knight.

Elsewhere, Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), & C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) escape the snowy planet, via the Millennium Falcon, while being hunted down by the Empire. There are some dangers along the way, with several asteroids blocking their escape, & being gobbled up by a space slug known as an Exogorth. If you want more information on Star Wars, go to the Wookieepedia.

Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker & R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) land on Dagobah. But they crash-land. Then, he (Luke Skywalker) meets Yoda, a short, green, elf-like, & a very wise master, who has lived for more than 500+ years. Wow, I guess he won the Guinness World Record of the oldest Jedi Master though.

Shortly after, Luke resumes his training, under the guidance of Yoda, where he (Yoda) says…

DO, OR DO NOT! THERE IS NO TRY!

However, Luke struggles to control his anger, as he has a vision of Darth Vader (David Prowse & James Earl Jones), until he witnesses Yoda lift up the X-WING from the swamp. Luke wants to face Vader, so that he can rescue his friends. But Yoda doesn’t want him to. So he abandons his training, & leaves the planet.

Eventually, Han Solo & Princess Leia fall in love, & they go to Cloud City on Bespin, along with Chewbacca & C-3PO. There, they meet Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams). But Vader captures them. Shortly after, Han Solo gets frozen in carbonite, & they escape.

Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker arrives, & engages Darth Vader in a lightsaber duel over the city’s central air shaft. But Vader overwhelms Luke, by severing his right hand, separating him from his lightsaber. He convinces Luke to turn to the dark side. But he refuses, citing that Obi-Wan claims that Darth Vader killed his own father. But Vader says…

NO, I AM YOUR FATHER!!

That line has often been mistaken as…

LUKE, I AM YOUR FATHER!!

For many years now.

Then, Luke Skywalker falls down, & he gets rescued by his friends. Shortly after, Luke’s hand gets replaced as a robotic hand, & they observe Lando & Chewbacca depart on the Millennium Falcon to rescue Han Solo, setting up the events for Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983).

THE END

This movie is almost as good as the very 1st film. But there are so many character introductions, & the plot twist, which stirred up more than just lots of conversations at a local coffee shop though. ☕️

OVERALL: 9.5/10
