Gremlins (1984)

Review Date: April 16th, 2023

Hi everyone. To also celebrate the 1-year anniversary of Popcorn Office, I have created a Wattpad Account. But I’m also using my Popcorn Office’s Wattpad to make Magazines. However, It’s a lot to think about, & it will take time to make my 1st ever Popcorn Office Magazine. This is the link to my Wattpad:

Gremlins (1984), the other PG-Rated Movie that started the whole PG-13 Rating. I have already discussed more of the PG-13 Rating in my previous review. But as I’ve said before, & I will say it again. In my opinion, I like all movies. But sometimes, there’s a movie that I would watch, & thought that was okay/alright/decent. However, the movies I don’t like are movie ripoffs, & certain versions of famous movies. For an example, Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal on Hannibal Lecter is the best.

I’m also not into Anime. But there’s some Anime that I like. But I’m also willing to watch an Anime movie out there. Finally, I’m also not into documentaries as well. However, I don’t hate/love both Anime & Documentaries. But my favorite Documentary of all time is Super Size Me (2004). But I think documentaries are important for the human knowledge. 🧠

However, Gremlins (1984) is about these creatures, where if you feed them at night. They’ll change. But back in Christmas of 2021, my Aunt Sandy (Dad’s Older Sister) & I were having a debate whether or not Gremlins (1984) is a Christmas movie. For me, It’s not a Christmas Movie. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments on my Socials. So let’s get down to the review for today.

Randall Peltzer, a struggling inventor visits a Chinatown antique store, hoping to find a Christmas present for his son Billy. Inside, Randall encounters a small, furry creature called a Mogwai. That’s Cantonese for Devil. The owner, Mr. Wing, refuses to sell Randall the creature. But his grandson secretly does, warning Randall to remember 3 important rules:

1. Don’t expose the Mogwai to light, especially sunlight, or else it will kill it/harm it.

2. Don’t let it come to contact with water, or else it will multiply.

3. NEVER feed it after midnight, or else it will change.

Randall returns home to Kingston Falls, where he gives the mogwai to Billy as a pet. Billy works in the local bank. But fears that his dog Barney will be put down by widowed miser, Mrs. Deagle. Randall names the mogwai Gizmo, & explains the 3 rules. Gizmo is friendly & compliant. But when Billy's young friend Pete accidentally spills water over Gizmo, 5 more mogwai spawn from his back, a more troublemaking sort led by the aggressive Stripe, named for the tuft of fur on his head.

Billy shows 1 of the mogwai to his former elementary school science teacher, Mr. Hanson, spawning another mogwai, on whom Hanson experiments. Back at home, Stripe & his fellow mogwai trick Billy into feeding them after midnight by severing the power cord on his alarm clock. They form cocoons, as does Hanson's mogwai, which soon hatch, emerging as mischievous, dark green, reptilian monsters, who then torture Gizmo & attack Billy's mother, Lynn. Then, Hanson is killed by his gremlin.

1 by 1, the Gremlins attack & kill the people in Kingston Falls, & Billy & Kate are able to kill off the Gremlins, except for Stripe, who dives into a swimming pool, thus creating an army full of gremlins. Sometime after, Billy & Kate discover that the town has fallen silent, & the gremlins are watching Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) in the local theater.

Then, they set off a natural gas explosion, incinerating all of the gremlins except for Stripe, who left to claim more candy at a Montgomery Ward store across the street. As morning approaches, they follow Stripe into the department store, where Stripe attempts to use a water fountain to spawn more gremlins. But Gizmo opens a skylight, exposing Stripe to sunlight, killing him.

As the local news reports on the day's mysterious tragedies, Mr. Wing reclaims Gizmo at the Peltzer home. He criticizes both the Peltzers' & Western society for their carelessness with nature. However, as he turns to leave, Gizmo, having bonded with Billy, bids the young man goodbye. A touched Mr. Wing then concedes that Billy may be ready 1 day, & until then, Gizmo will be waiting.

THE END (for now)

Gremlins (1984) is a really good movie. But I’m not a huge fan of the debate, whether or not Gremlins (1984) is a Christmas movie. It’s an Anti-Christmas movie. Examples of Anti-Christmas movies include…

1. Die Hard (1988)

2. Edward Scissorhands (1990)

3. Batman Returns (1992)

Anti-Christmas movies are movies that lack the traditional qualities & elements of being a Christmas movie.

However, my next movie review will be the 1st-ever PG-13 Movie ever released…
