WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Crysta is a fairy of curious nature who lives in a magical rainforest, free from human pollution known as…
FernGully
The fairies of FernGully once lived in harmony with humans. But believe that the humans have gone extinct, after having been driven away by a dark spirit named…
Hexxus!
Crysta is the apprentice of Magi, a fairy who imprisoned Hexxus in a tree before the events of the film. 1 day, Crysta explores a new part of the forest, & meets Batty Koda, a bat who claims to have been experimented on by humans, giving him a manic & deluded personality, which is my favorite character in the movie though.
However, the fairies refuse to believe him, except for Crysta, who volunteers to investigate the situation. Then, she meets a young lumberjack named…
Zak Young
Whom Crysta accidentally shrinks, when she tries to save him from being crushed by a falling tree. Even though she doesn’t know how to restore him to normal size.
The tree that Hexxus is imprisoned in is cut down by Zak's supervisors named…
Tony & Ralph!
Then, Hexxus quickly starts to regain his powers, by feeding on pollution. He manipulates Tony & Ralph to drive to FernGully. Meanwhile, back in FernGully, Zak meets Pips, a fairy who is jealous of Zak's relationship with Crysta. Zak begins to fall in love with Crysta. But hides the true reason that the humans had returned.
When the signs of Hexxus's resurrection begin to manifest themselves in poisoned trees & rivers, Zak finally admits that the humans are destroying the forest. Shortly after, the fairies mount an attempt to defend their homes. Knowing that their fight is hopeless, Zak convinces Batty to aid him in stopping the machine before it destroys them. When Zak makes his presence known to Tony & Ralph, Hexxus takes over the machine, & begins to destroy the forest in an extreme degree. Then, Magi sacrifices herself, so that she can give the fairies a chance, & she tells Crysta to remember everything that she's learned.
Zak manages to stop the machine, depriving Hexxus the source of his power. But he manifests himself within the oil in the machine, & begins to ignite the forest in flames. To prevent this from happening, Crysta sacrifices herself, by allowing herself to be devoured by Hexxus & all seems lost, until he begins to sprout limbs, & leaves like a tree.
Batty, Pips, & the rest of the fairies of FernGully rally to the powers that they have been given, which causes the seed that Crysta fed Hexxus to start growing wildly. Hexxus & the machine are both simultaneously imprisoned by the newly grown tree at the very border of FernGully, which bursts into bloom.
Crysta appears after the fight, having survived, & succeeds Magi as a magical fairy. Then, she gives Zak a seed, begging him to remember everything that has occurred, & she sadly restores him to his human size. Remembering the seed in his hand, Zak promises to remember his adventure, & buries the seed in the soil, before telling Tony and Ralph that things need to change, as they leave the forest behind.
Then, the seed sprouts new growth for FernGully as Crysta playfully chases Pips , along with Batty following them.
The End
For Our Children, & Our Children’s Children.
FernGully: The Last Rainforest (1992) was also 1 of my childhood favorite movies growing up when I was a kid. I even got my twin brother’s girlfriend to watch the film as well. I had 1st heard of the film, when I watched the teaser trailer for the movie, as I was watching the 1991 VHS Release of Home Alone (1990). After I watched the trailer for FernGully, I had thought to myself that maybe someday, I could watch it. So I did.
Even though I had watched the film a few times so far, I used to constantly talk about the film, & quote Batty Koda’s lines from the movie. However, I still have yet to watch the direct-to-video sequel known as…
FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue (1998)
though. But the full movie of the sequel’s on YouTube, & it’s free to watch, along with a VHS Rip of the sequel as well.
But my next review will not be a movie review. It will be a review on a streaming service.
